Sabah Archdiocesan Education Commission

Mission schools place great emphasis on holistic education, balancing character development with academic excellence. It promotes the dignity, self-esteem and full development of the person, empowering young girls/boys to become people of integrity, with emphasis on the formation of the heart, so as to be committed to service to their family, nation and the world. This is in tandem with the aspirations expressed in the 'Rukun Negara' and the National Philosophy of Education.

A Teacher's Prayer

Jesus Master,
Sanctify my mind and increase my faith.
Deliver me from error, from vain thoughts,
and from the eternal darkness.

Jesus the Way,
Lead me to the Father.
I offer myself entirely to You.
Sanctify me, make me Your faithful follower.

Jesus the Life,
Live in me so that I may live in You.
Do not permit me to be separated from You.
Make me live forever the joys of Your love.

Jesus the Truth,
Teach me to proclaim Your truths to all,
Grant that wherever I go,
my presence may bring peace,

CALLED TO BE TEACHERS IN SCHOOLS

CALLING:
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send. And who will go for us?” And I said “Here am I. Send me.”

WILL YOU RESPOND?

Objectives:

1. To provide the official stand of the Catholic Church on all issues related to education in the country in general and in the state in particular.
2. To study all relevant educational matters affecting the Malaysian Catholic Community and take action necessary to resolve these matters by negotiating with the appropriate authorities.
3. To ensure that a suitable environment for the development of the total human person among all races and creeds is maintained at all times in the schools.
4. To ensure the proper faith formation of Catholic students.
5. To collect and disseminate information on matters pertaining to Catholic education in Malaysia and in the State.
6. To establish and maintain effective contact and dialogue with every educational organizations and with the mission schools.
7. To hold consultation with the Department of Education over the appointment of heads and assistant heads of primary schools and principals of secondary schools.

A Brief History... Schools belonged to Catholic Church

Founded in St Mary Primary School in Sandakan, being the oldest school back in the year 1883 under the British North Borneo Company and later funded by the Government through grants.

Other mission schools were built by Mill Hill priests / nuns funded by their own home countries. Labuan’s St Anthony (1940) and St Anne (1937) were built by MHM, funded by England and Holland.

De La Salle brothers came in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s and built the Sacred Heart Primary School, La Salle Secondary School and St Martin.

Franciscan Sister of the Immaculate Conception built Stella Maris Primary and Secondary Schools. They took over from the White Sisters in the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Functions:

1. The Church through the School Management Boards should keep abreast o

f current educational affairs by seeking or briefings by educational authorities so that, equipped with the up-to-date knowledge and information on educational matters, they could play a more positive and contributory role in ensuring the proper running and administration of our schools and to preserve a proper balance of our own Catholic students or even seeking provision for religious instruction in schools should there be justification for it.
2. The Bishop, as Head of the Local Church should provide the leadership and initiate dialogues or discussions with the relevant authorities as well as to state clearly the official stand of the Church in matter affecting the education of our Catholic children and youth.
